OH NO! It passed! 216-214. H.Con.Res 14 which is the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act extension is a budget blueprint for fiscal years 2026 to 2036. We are going to see sweeping cuts through our federal agencies and potential cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. To what extent of damage will be done in federal agency cuts cannot be determined at this time as many things are being held up in court due to the unconstitutional nature of these cuts. These agencies were created through congress and require congress to discontinue them. However, as previously explained we no longer have three equal branches of government.
This budget blueprint only tells the various federal agencies how much to cut, it does not say specifically what to cut. This is only the first steps of the plan according to a PBS article. There are many more steps ahead that need to be voted on before we see the whole budget come into fruition. The most concerning area that Democrats have sounded alarms on is the $880 billon cuts from the Energy and Commerce Committee. This Committee is what oversees the Health and Human Services (HHS). The HHS oversees our Medicare and Medicaid. The prior advisor says that it is mathematically impossible to cut $880 billon from the Energy and Commerce Committee without cutting Medicaid. We however, won't know what gets cut until the Energy and Commerce Committee decides where they want these cuts to come from in their committee. Here is a great article discussing some of the impacts that could happen due to cuts in Medicare and Medicaid.
Sadly, tons of people will be effected by these various agency cuts along with the potential cuts to Medicaid and Medicare. We won't know the full impact of these cuts initially, but it will definitely be something to follow. I'll be following along, so be sure to subscribe to my newsletter for further updates!
