A Perversion of Christianity Seeking Political Power

In 2020 I had a crisis of faith. I experienced the worst year of my life as a nurse. A global pandemic occurred and I became the most hated person in the USA as a COVID nurse. There was a lack of empathy and understanding for what others were experiencing and a lack of willingness to take simple precautions to care for their neighbor's health. A lot of hate and vitriol was coming from the very faith community that I had been a part of since birth, Catholicism. I was completely shocked and astounded by what was happening and it didn't matter what I said. So many people wanted to believe COVID was fake while I watched over 100 people die that year.
That year I made the difficult decision to leave the Catholic church. It was the best decision I made for my mental health at the time. I went through a very dark period of my life suffering a deep depression. I spent a lot of time reading the Bible. It brought me hope and made me realize that Jesus is love. It was that simple, Christianity is to love. It confused me why so many Catholics were not very loving that year.
This year as I dive into politics and activism I learned that many Christians are following Christian Nationalism ideology. Christian Nationalism is a perversion of Christianity. According to Christian's Against Christian Nationalism, Christian Nationalism is “a political ideology that seeks to merge Christian and American identities, distorting both the Christian faith and America’s constitutional democracy.” It's a movement for political power. 2020 was smack dab in the middle of Trump 1.0 and sadly many of the Christians I had known all my life were a part of the Cult of Trump and this Christian Nationalism ideology. Christian Nationalism ideology has been pushed for 50 years on the far-right and sadly many of my fellow Christian brothers and sisters probably do not even realize they have steered away from the teachings of Christ.
Christian Nationalists seek to "re-Christianize" the United States. They seek power and dominion over the nation's people as a whole. However, the United States was never a Christian nation. Our Bill of Rights Amendment 1 states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”. This gives everyone the right to practice the religion that they see fit. The founders came to America for religious and political freedom. Christian Nationalism also hides white supremacy behind this movement. We saw this play out in the very beginning of Trump 2.0 getting rid of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Sadly what is being broken during Trump 2.0 will take decades to fix.
